Overview

Every day, people around the world rely on innovative and effective medical devices to preserve and enhance their health. Fueling this more than $100 billion-dollar industry, our exceptionally strong medical device team works with designers, engineers, physicians and manufacturers to protect and defend the innovative essence behind these marvels of modern medicine. Sometimes it’s an incremental improvement that advances outcomes. Sometimes it’s a device that revolutionizes an industry. In either case, proper and appropriate IP protection is essential for bringing these products to the marketplace, where devices can realize their greatest benefit for patients, clinicians, and all the stakeholders in each critical stage of development.

We’ve set out to build one of the nation’s preeminent medical device practices. Our team comes with a diverse range of technical, scientific and medical backgrounds that can be matched to a great number of sub-specialties. We have extensive experience working with venture-backed startups, growth companies, universities and research institutions developing technologies for use in such fields as orthopedics and neurosurgery, structural heart disease, surgical monitoring, ophthalmic surgery, glucose monitoring and pulmonary health. Something that sets MCC apart is our ability to form a right-sized team around the very specific technology needs of our clients, including inventions that involve multiple, combination or cross-disciplinary technologies.

We work with national and international clients throughout the entire IP lifecycle. In addition to our robust prosecution practice, we serve medical device clients facing or considering litigation or other adversarial proceedings. We recently assisted a major cardiovascular company in litigation that yielded the client more than $1 billion in damages and licensing fees. When transactions are part of the growth plan, we are well-versed in facilitating in- and out-bound licensing, as well as forming strategies around IP-focused joint ventures, M&As and other complex transactions.

Beyond our technical expertise, our team is noted for its high level of service and the value we bring to the table. Our goal is always to deliver a personalized experience that aligns with your goals and budget.

Medical Device Industry Involvement

Our lawyers maintain an active connection with the medical device and bioscience community, including mentoring early-stage medical device companies selected to present to venture capitalists under the auspices of Southeast Life Sciences. Our lawyers also speak on intellectual property issues related to medical devices, have lobbied before Congress regarding the Patent Reform Bill, and contributed an amicus brief to the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit addressing the needs of medical device software developers.
