Katie Bates is known for her expertise in defending and asserting the intellectual property rights of her clients. Katie’s career began as a Law Clerk for former Chief Judge Joel F. Dubina of the 11th Circuit, followed by her continued representation of clients in copyright, patent, and trade secret disputes in both trial court and federal appeals. Additionally, she represents trademark clients in prosecution and infringement matters, as well as evaluation of intellectual property assets.

In addition to her litigation practice, Katie has increasingly been involved in cybersecurity and privacy matters.  Katie counsels her clients on legal issues relating to the handling of personal and sensitive information on computer networks. 

Katie’s legal proficiencies have been repeatedly recognized by legal award publications, including Super Lawyers where she has five times been selected as a Georgia Rising Star in Intellectual Property. She has also been selected as the Copyright Chair for the IP Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia, is President of the Board of Directors for the non-profit Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and is a member of the Board of Directors for the Coralwood Foundation.

Before joining the firm, Katie practiced at one of the nation’s most recognized AmLaw 100 firms.  Prior to that, she served as a law clerk to the Honorable Joel F. Dubina of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and was an intern to the Honorable William S. Duffey, Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. Katie also served as a Performance Audit Supervisor for the State of Georgia before receiving her law degree, where she evaluated and advised the State and citizens on the efficiency and effectiveness of state-managed programs.

Katie received her B.S. in Cell and Molecular Biology and Political Science, magna cum laude, with honors, from Tulane University, where she was elected to the Mortar Board and Omicron Delta Kappa honor societies and served as Vice President of the student body. She received her J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Georgia School of Law, where she served as Editor in Chief of the Georgia Law Review and was selected to the Order of the Coif and as a member of the University’s Blue Key Honor Society.
