Biography

For close to twenty years, Lisa Pavento has been providing intellectual property counseling in the areas of trademarks, copyrights, licensing/assignment agreements, patents, pre-litigation strategy, and litigation. Lisa’s clients include start-up companies, both mid-size and multi-national corporations, national trade organizations, and universities. Lisa’s primary focus is to serve as a trusted partner to her clients. She does this by taking the time to learn about her clients’ short term and long term goals, and tailoring her services and counseling to meet those goals.

Trademarks
Lisa counsels her clients regarding cost-effective trademark strategies and the importance of mark clearance and selection prior to the use of a mark and/or the filing of a trademark application. She provides straight-forward and practical advice regarding the costs, benefits, and risks associated with adopting a new mark. Once a mark is chosen, Lisa assists her clients with prosecuting trademark applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and domestic and international portfolio and conflict management. Lisa regularly handles cancellation and opposition proceedings in both domestic and international tribunals and counsels clients in association with trademark litigation matters. She also routinely drafts and negotiates intellectual property licensing agreements that encompass one or more of trademark, copyright and patent properties.

Copyrights
Lisa advises clients regarding copyright registration, joint development, licensing and litigation. She was extensively involved in the copyright case Georgia et al. v Public.Resource.Org., Inc. from its inception in district court until the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in 2020. Lisa also has significant litigation experience in the area of copyright fair use.

Patents
After graduating magna cum laude from a pre-medical program, Lisa spent three years working on a Ph.D. in Immunology with a specific focus on mechanisms of signal transduction by glycosyl-phosphatidyl-inositol anchored receptors. She uses this broad-based knowledge to maintain a biotechnology practice that includes subject matter such as therapeutics, diagnostics, genomics, biopharmaceuticals, and drug delivery. Lisa has significant experience with domestic and international patent prosecution, patent portfolio management, licensing, assignment and merger deals, and preparation of patent-related opinions.
